To commemorate the centenary of the beginning of World War I, the Ivybridge Branch of the Royal British Legion has spent the last 12 months creating a remembrance garden on a piece of land, named Harry’s Patch, next to the roundabout on Leonards Road. The planting consists of wild flowers heavily populated with poppies, which are a symbol of remembrance.
The Harry’s Patch dedication ceremony was held on Saturday by Reverend Ken Bromage.
Ray Wilson explained the creation of the stunning field of poppies, in recognition of those from the town who fell during the First World War.
Ivybridge Chairman Dermot Roberts welcomed those who attended and those invited to speak including RBL Devon County Chairman Ralph Howard-Williams, South West Devon MP Gary Streeter and Ivybridge Mayor Mrs Karen Pringle.
The ceremony concluded with the last post and Exhortation read out by Ivybridge RBL President Dave Davis.
The AFT were humbled by the invitation to the ceremony, in a continuance of this year’s collaboration with the RBL. Ralph Howard-Williams is delighted at how the relationship is developing between the RBL and the Trust and is very much looking forward to the Armed Services Day event that is already in preparation for November 15th.
The Ceremony, which was an enormous success, was followed by a buffet lunch and raffle (which raised around £100) at the Sportsman’s Inn, courtesy of Bill Hibbert.
